When should I do my maternity photoshoot: A guide for Perth Families

Perth maternity photographer

Hello to my beautiful Perth mums-to-be, I am here to help you book your maternity photoshoot with confidence so you can relax and enjoy the experience. Here are my top tips when deciding on the timing of your maternity session.

1. How far along are you?

The typical time frame advised to book is 28-34 weeks because it is late enough that your bump should be well defined, but not so late that you risk having the baby before your scheduled session. Of course, there is no exact way of knowing what babies schedule looks like (although wouldn’t it be handy), but this is generally a safe timeframe to go by where you can show off that beautiful bump.

2. Comfort is key

As much as we want to stick to the timeline, I have done maternity sessions prior to the 28 week period, simply because these Perth Mum’s just know they won’t be up for it as the pregnancy progresses. Whether it is because of increased difficulty with mobility, complications or simply they know their belly will be a lot bigger meaning it is more difficult to feel comfortable and they want to capture the smaller bump. Whatever the personal preference is, rest assured that I will absolutely be able to capture your bump earlier than the 28 week mark and help you feel as comfortable as possible.

3. Seasonal considerations

Doing a maternity photoshoot in Perth comes with its seasonal challenges. We all know the Summers are stinking hot and Winters can be icey. Booking your session a few weeks earlier to avoid the heat (especially since it feels 10x worse during pregnancy) or rain, is not the worst idea to ensure your comfort.

Alternatively, an in-home maternity session could be an option to avoid the heat. In-home maternity sessions can be just as magical as an outdoor session and avoids the harsh elements – WIN!

4. Consult your healthcare provider

Before any maternity photoshoot, you should speak to your healthcare provider about any limitations you may have or whether you should book earlier due to complications, etc. Please always follow your healthcare providers advice and make your photographer aware of any issues during your session.
