Competition is fierce out there in the land of photography and while everyone wants to be the best Perth Family Photographer, I will be the first to admit that I am definitely not the best…but I think that works to my advantage.

I don’t plan my sessions
I know, that sounds like I come unprepared. Hear me out! I generally don’t plan my sessions in the sense that I don’t have a list of shots to recreate or poses to put you in. I have natural prompts and games to play with the kids and then we see what happens. I don’t put expectations on the session because we just don’t know how the kids will feel on the day, whether the rain will unexpectedly show up or you’ll be feeling extra morning sick that day. It happens and I embrace everything that gets thrown our way.
I get to work with likeminded families
My work is intimate, based on child-led play and natural prompts to capture your true and unique selves. I aim to attract clients who share this same approach and are happy to go with the flow and have a laugh, sometimes at their own expense. Sometimes when you are considered the ‘best’ you focus too much on what a broad audience of people want and not what drives your soul and attracts the people you want to work with. By figuring out what I want and who I want to work with, it allows me to stay focuses on my specific style and genuinely enjoy working with all the families that my business attracts.
Room to improve
Admitting I’m not the best Perth Family Photographer allows me to accept the fact that I will ALWAYS have more to learn. Whether it’s new techniques, new things to do during my sessions, new ways of editing or managing my business. I will forever strive to be the best I personally can be where the only competition is who I was yesterday.
Less focus on what is ‘technically good art’
I studied Photography at uni and I’ll confess here that I knew I’d be able to pass it fairly easily, not because I was ‘good’ but because art is subjective. As long as I showed I had a basic understanding and submitted SOMETHING, I was golden. For this reason, I don’t like to focus on what is ‘technically good’. If I capture a beautiful moment between two people, but for whatever reason the photo is too slanted or breaks a ‘rule of thirds’ or whatever it may be, you best believe I’ll still deliver it. It’s your special moment captured in time and I won’t let you miss out on that because of the rules.

If this doesn’t make me the best Perth Family Photographer, I’m genuinely okay with that. All I want is to find my tribe and clients who fit with my laid-back, relaxed and candid style of shooting where everyone can be themselves and to continue to deliver beautiful artwork to Perth Families.
