Planning your Perth family photoshoot doesn’t need to be hard. It can feel daunting choosing your photographer, what to wear, where to go, etc etc. But with this checklist, the process is simplified and straight forward!

1. Choose your ideal date and time
A few factors will go into deciding the date and time. Choosing a date that is suitable for you not only requires you to check your schedule, but also check what season you are looking to book. If you want beach shots of the kids in the water, obviously we go for a warmer month.
If you want cosy knits and golden and brown leaves on trees, we look at Autumn. Have a think about what aesthetic you’d like your gallery to have and deduct what month works best from there.
Time wise, have a think about the sunset but also the kids temperament. I have ways of getting around ‘golden hour’ without compromising on the golden sunset look, so if you think the kids will be tired and over it by sunset, let me know. We can have a look at options!

2. Choose your location
Choosing the right location for your Perth family photoshoot is going to depend on the type of vibe you want, accessibility and personal connection to the space.
My sessions are done either outdoors at various locations, or in the comfort of your own home.
Some questions to ask yourself when deciding are:
- What vibe suits our family best? (bush, forrest, ocean, open field, our backyard, our lounge room)
- How far do we want to drive?
- Will we need to walk far when we get there?
- Do we need public toilets available?
- Is there ample parking?
- How secluded is the location/does it even matter?
I have a range of my favourite locations that I have personally done multiple family photoshoots at and can recommend options based on your answers to the above questions.

3. Plan your outfits
Choosing what to wear for your family photoshoot is arguably the hardest part of the process! Luckily, I have put together a guide for you to ensure you are dressed comfortably, in your own personal style, in colours and styles that photograph well, coordinated with each other and suitable for the weather.

4. Prep the family
Making sure everyone knows what to expect and making sure everyone is fed and comfortable are a great way to kick off the session. Preparing your family for your photoshoot is quite simple and really only requires some snacks, water bottles filled and a few talks before hand about who I am and what we are going to be doing.
I have some tricks up my sleeve to get kids comfortable and warmed up to me, so you do the prep work and I’ll do the rest!

5. Pack the essentials
Snacks? Check.
Water? Check.
Warm jumpers? Check.
Shoes? Check.
Favourite stuffy/blanket/toy? Check.
Change of clothes juuuuust in case? Check.
Wipes, nappies, dummies, bottles? Check.
Basically anything you would normally leave the house with for the kids, bring it. If we are out in nature, chances are they will get dirty. Embrace it and keep a change of clothes handy just in case!

6. Have fun
Okay, I changed my mind. THIS is the most important part of the process. Having fun on your family photoshoot is what will allow me to capture everyone’s natural selves, the best images and just get everyone having an all round good tie.
If you come into your session expecting a fun and adventurous time, with an open mind and know that not everything will go ‘as planned’ then that is the best way to be. Your kids will feed off your energy, so throw caution to the wind and let yourselves relax and be present in the moment. I got you.
Perth family photoshoots are what I do and what I thrive at. If you think my style is your vibe, get in touch and let’s book your next session!
