Perth Family Photography: 3 prompts for candid moments with your kids

If you are looking for natural, joy-filled moments in your Perth family photography session, these 5 prompts are going to help you achieve the best results.

Play-based sessions and natural prompts are what my entire business is built around as a family photographer. Why? Because, not only do we know that if the kids are happy, everyone is happy, but my mission is to capture your personality, your children’s personality and your whole family units personality exactly as you are. No fake smiles, no bribes and definitely no punishments for not smiling.

I want you to be able to look back on the photos and have fond memories of our afternoon session together and smile remembering how our children lit up and played.

1. Run and scare mum/dad

This one is a favourite for kids. I tell them to stand behind mum or dad, who is generally down on one knee, ready for the surprise. I count to 3 and say GO, which is their queue to run and scare you. As a result, it usually ends in an impromptu piggy back or cuddle which is a fun action moment full of smiles and laughter. Generally followed by a request of “AGAIN!”

      2. What colour are mums/dad’s eyes?

This is for a quieter moment, when everyone is more relaxed and we want to get a soft, tender moment. I ask your child to look into your eyes and tell me what colour they are. Using this prompt, we can get results like them gazing into your eyes, touching your face or even touching their nose to yours. It’s a simple way to get them focused on you and smiling when they tell you the verdict.

      3. Blanket swings

This one is a hit with siblings! All we need is a blanket, a parent/adult on either end and children on the blanket. The blanket is lifted above the ground and gently swung from side to side, resulting in a blanket swing. Having an older sibling hugging their younger sibling in front of them makes for the sweetest picture, kind of like a rollercoaster ride without the wind filled cheeks and stunned expressions!

My Perth family photography sessions are all run with children’s happiness and joy in mind. I am acutely aware too just how fast time goes and how much they change in, what feels like, the blink of an eye.

I have many prompts up my sleeve for my family photoshoots and treat them as more of a ‘playdate’ where there is no pressure to smile or pose or be anyone but themselves.

Sounds like what you want from your family photoshoot?
