What’s the difference?

Well, posed family photos is about structure and creating a polished look with a certain aesthetic in mind. The classic example is of everyone standing together, going in order of height with everyone smiling and facing the camera. Simple, pleasing to the eye and shows a typically happy moment in time.

Natural and candid photos are more about emotion, connection and showing the REAL you. When I think of my kids personalities, I don’t think of perfect, smiling children. I mean, far from it! They are quirky, they have their own interests, they like to act out their favourite shows characters and I can tell exactly who they are pretending to be just by looking at the way they hold themselves. My youngest has a cheeky smile that says ‘I’m up to mischief but you don’t know what it is yet!’ and my oldest loves to be a dinosaur and I can tell which Dino he is by looking at his pose.

These are the memories I want to capture of my kids and the memories I want to give you as parents of unique and interesting kids too.

It also keeps the kids happy!

At the start of every one of my sessions involving kids, I say “if the kids are happy, everyone is happy!”

With my sessions being play-based and including natural prompts, they are very much focused around the children’s happiness. It doesn’t matter if we are playing chase, hide and seek, looking for bugs and birds or simply talking about their favourite TV show, if they are happy, they will interact naturally with you and we will capture their true selves.

And, when they are that happy, there are candid and tender moments everywhere.

These moments may only last a split second. But luckily my lowest shutter speed is 1/250th of a second, so I like my chances! A bear hug during chasey when they catch you, a glance into your eyes as you wipe a bit of dirt off their nose, a hand hold when you go to hide together during hide and seek…all these moments are beautiful and show your relationship. Don’t ever think that a high energy and playful session won’t result in tender moments because they are everywhere.
